ROLE OVERVIEW

This Business Unit Director – CVM role at AstraZeneca India puts the successful candidate at the helm of one of the company's most strategically critical therapeutic franchises: Cardiovascular, Renal and Metabolism. India carries an enormous and fast-rising burden of hypertension, heart failure, diabetes and chronic kidney disease, making CVM a core growth pillar alongside oncology and respiratory. The director owns full P&L accountability, shapes brand strategy across the portfolio, leads a large field force, and partners with Medical, Market Access and Regulatory to widen patient access. Because the position reports into senior India commercial leadership and interfaces with global brand teams, it offers exceptional visibility, influence over launch and lifecycle decisions, and a genuine platform for shaping patient outcomes at population scale.

ROLE DEFINITION & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • •Define and articulate a clear vision, therapy-area strategy and annual business plan for the entire CVM portfolio, translating global priorities into India-specific execution.
  • •Own the Business Unit P&L, forecasting, budgets and resource allocation while delivering sustainable, profitable volume and value growth.
  • •Lead development and execution of brand strategies across the CVM portfolio, aligning global brand direction with local scientific insight and market intelligence.
  • •Drive sales force deployment, targeting, incentive design and field-force productivity to consistently achieve or exceed sales targets.
  • •Partner cross-functionally with Medical Affairs, Market Access, Regulatory, Supply and Finance to deliver integrated commercial and access strategies.
  • •Champion patient-centric innovation, value-based access programmes and digital engagement initiatives that improve diagnosis rates and treatment adherence.
  • •Build, coach and retain a high-performing, multi-layered team, driving succession planning, capability building and a culture of accountability.
  • •Ensure rigorous governance, ethical promotion and full compliance with AstraZeneca's Code of Ethics, local regulations and risk-management standards.

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Graduate degree in Pharmacy, Life Sciences, Medicine or a related scientific discipline; an MBA or postgraduate management qualification is strongly desirable.
  • Minimum 15 years of progressive pharmaceutical sales and marketing experience, including demonstrated ownership of a business unit or therapy-area P&L.
  • Proven record of delivering commercial performance, market-share growth and successful brand launches or lifecycle expansion in the India market.
  • Prior experience leading large, layered field teams with direct and indirect reports, including managing managers in a matrixed organisation.
  • Deep working knowledge of the Indian pharmaceutical market, pricing dynamics, distribution models and healthcare stakeholder landscape.
  • Exposure to cardiovascular, renal, metabolic or other chronic-care therapy areas is a distinct advantage.
  • Strong financial acumen with the ability to interpret P&L, forecasting and investment-return data to guide strategic decisions.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • •Experience launching or scaling chronic-care brands in India
  • •Digital and omnichannel commercial engagement expertise

EXPECTED CAREER ROADMAP

This position sits on the senior commercial leadership ladder, making the natural next step a Country or Cluster Commercial Director, Head of Commercial Operations, or General Manager role for a larger therapeutic portfolio, typically within two to four years for a strong performer. Because the role carries P&L ownership and exposure to the India leadership team plus global brand groups, high visibility performance accelerates promotion. Lateral exits are equally strong: peers move into General Manager roles at multinational or Indian pharmaceutical companies, business-head positions in specialty-care or diagnostics organisations, or commercial leadership in health-tech and market-access consulting, where therapy-area P&L expertise commands a premium.

APPLICATION ADVISORY

Lead your CV with quantified therapy-area outcomes: revenue and market-share growth, portfolio size managed, team headcount, launch metrics and EBITDA contribution. Prepare to defend your P&L decisions in a case-style discussion, covering investment trade-offs, forecast assumptions and field-force sizing. Brush up on India's cardiovascular, renal and metabolic disease burden, competitor landscapes, and access challenges in tier-2 and tier-3 cities. Expect competency questions on leading managers, cross-functional influence, compliance judgement and change leadership. Bring a concise, data-backed 90-day strategic view for the CVM business.
