ROLE OVERVIEW

GSK is hiring a Principal Engineer – AI/ML to build and operate production machine learning systems for its Global Clinical Operations function in Bengaluru. The role covers the full model lifecycle on Azure Databricks and Azure Machine Learning, from experimentation through governed deployment in a regulated setting.

ROLE DEFINITION & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • •Architect and deploy production ML models and GenAI/LLM solutions for clinical operations, including trial feasibility, site selection, patient recruitment forecasting and study monitoring.
  • •Own the complete ML lifecycle: data ingestion, feature engineering, versioning, serving and production performance monitoring.
  • •Build and improve MLOps pipelines on Azure Databricks using Unity Catalog, MLflow Tracking, MLflow Model Registry and automated CI/CD workflows for continuous training and deployment.
  • •Manage online and batch endpoints, compute clusters, batch inference pipelines and model monitoring dashboards.
  • •Implement model serving patterns such as real-time REST endpoints, batch scoring jobs and feature stores.
  • •Support data scientists in converting experimental notebooks into scalable, maintainable production code and work with data engineers on feature pipelines, Delta Lake tables and streaming feeds.
  • •Uphold MLOps practices including experiment tracking, reproducibility, versioning, A/B testing, canary deployments, drift detection and automated retraining, with compliance to data governance, GxP, privacy and responsible AI standards.
  • •Mentor junior engineers and data scientists on production ML engineering and Azure/Databricks tooling.

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's or master's degree in computer science, software engineering, mathematics, statistics or a related quantitative field.
  • 9–10 years of hands-on ML engineering or MLOps experience with a proven track record of deploying and operating ML models in enterprise production environments.
  • Experience packaging models into scalable microservices using FastAPI, Flask or MLflow/Unity Catalog serving endpoints for real-time and batch use.
  • Deep Azure Databricks expertise in Spark-based data processing, Delta Lake, Databricks Workflows, Databricks/UC Feature Store and cluster lifecycle management.
  • Proficient MLflow use for experiment tracking, model registry, model packaging and programmatic deployment via the MLflow REST API.
  • Strong Python programming plus proficiency in Scikit-learn, PyTorch and/or TensorFlow, including packaging models as reusable libraries or containers.
  • CI/CD experience with Git branching and PR-based workflows and Azure DevOps or GitHub Actions pipelines for automated testing, model validation and deployment gating.
  • Docker containerization of ML images and familiarity with orchestration concepts for ML workloads.
  • Working knowledge of ADLS Gen2, Azure Key Vault, Azure Monitor and cost optimization for ML workloads.
  • Strong problem-solving and communication skills, able to articulate technical decisions and trade-offs to non-technical clinical and business stakeholders and to lead delivery in agile, cross-functional matrix teams.
