Biostatisticians and statistical programmers turn clinical trial data into the evidence regulators review. Biostatisticians design the statistical analysis plan, choose methods and interpret results. Statistical programmers implement that plan in code, producing analysis datasets and the Tables, Listings and Figures (TLFs) that go into clinical study reports and regulatory submissions.

Most programming roles centre on SAS, with R and Python increasingly requested. Submission work follows CDISC standards: SDTM for tabulated study data and ADaM for analysis-ready datasets, along with define.xml and validation tools such as Pinnacle 21. Independent double programming and PROC COMPARE validation are standard quality practices.

Employers usually look for a degree in statistics, mathematics, life sciences or a related field plus hands-on SAS skills. A common path runs from Statistical Programmer to Senior and Principal Programmer or Lead, while biostatistician roles generally prefer a master's degree or higher in statistics.
