ROLE OVERVIEW

AstraZeneca's Global Capability Centre in Chennai is hiring a Full Stack Engineer to build the Augmented Biologics Discovery Platform — a cloud-native product suite that shortens the path from antibody idea to clinical candidate. Sitting at the intersection of software engineering, AI/ML and computational biology, the role translates complex scientific workflows into production-grade services and data products that discovery scientists use every day. This is a strategic build-out for AstraZeneca: biologics represent a fast-growing share of its oncology, respiratory and rare-disease pipeline, and the speed at which computational teams can model, rank and validate antibody candidates directly influences how quickly programmes reach IND. For engineers who want their code to shape real therapeutic programmes rather than generic enterprise software, it is a rare opportunity to work beside scientists, product leaders and MLOps specialists at global scale.

ROLE DEFINITION & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • •Design and implement end-to-end, cloud-native full-stack applications supporting antibody and biologics discovery workflows.
  • •Build and ship production-grade data products and services that power AI/ML model training and inference in discovery science.
  • •Partner with product, UX and scientific users to convert manual lab and analysis workflows into intuitive digital journeys.
  • •Propose and implement changes to data models, core architecture and the shared codebase to raise quality and delivery velocity.
  • •Contribute across the stack — APIs, services, front-end interfaces and infrastructure — even outside core areas of expertise.
  • •Deploy and support core infrastructure on Docker and Kubernetes, improving scalability, reliability, performance and availability.
  • •Champion engineering rigour through code reviews, automated testing, CI/CD pipelines, logging, monitoring and alerting.
  • •Mentor peers, experiment with emerging technologies and advance modern agile ways of working.

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Bioinformatics or a related quantitative discipline.
  • 5+ years of professional software engineering experience, ideally within cloud-native product teams.
  • Proven record designing end-to-end full-stack systems on AWS, Azure or GCP.
  • Deep expertise in Java and Python, with hands-on use of Spring, Flask or Django.
  • Strong front-end capability with React, Angular or Vue.js, plus CSS and frameworks such as Bootstrap.
  • Experience with relational and/or NoSQL databases and query optimisation techniques.
  • Working knowledge of Linux, CI/CD tooling (Jenkins, GitHub Actions), Docker and Kubernetes.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • •Computational Biology / Bioinformatics Concepts
  • •Machine Learning & MLOps Fundamentals
  • •Microservice Architecture
  • •Message Queuing (RabbitMQ, SQS)
  • •GitOps for Kubernetes

ORGANIZATION CONTEXT & CULTURE

AstraZeneca is a global, science-led biopharmaceutical company focused on the discovery, development, and commercialisation of prescription medicines. The company operates in various therapeutic areas, including Oncology, Cardiovascular, Renal & Metabolism, and Respiratory & Immunology. AstraZeneca is committed to pushing the boundaries of science to deliver life-changing medicines and improve patient outcomes worldwide.

TEAM SIZE: 89,000+ employees
INDUSTRY: Pharmaceuticals / Biopharmaceuticals / Healthcare

EXPECTED CAREER ROADMAP

Within two to three years, a strong performer typically progresses from Senior Engineer to Technical Lead or Staff Engineer, owning the architecture of a discovery platform domain and mentoring a small squad. Adjacent moves into MLOps engineering, data product management or computational biology platform leadership are common, and AstraZeneca's global R&D organisation offers lateral paths into its Cambridge, Gothenburg or Boston sites. Beyond AstraZeneca, this profile is highly portable: India's fast-growing biotech and AI-driven drug discovery sector actively recruits engineers who understand both cloud platforms and scientific data, while genomics, diagnostics and digital health-tech product firms are natural exit options.

APPLICATION ADVISORY

Lead your CV with delivery outcomes, not technology lists: name the platform you built, its user base, and the latency, cost or reliability gains achieved. Expect a live coding round covering data structures, design patterns and trade-off reasoning — be ready to defend architectural choices. Prepare for a system design exercise on multi-tenant cloud services and data pipelines, and revise Flask/Django or Spring alongside React component design. Because the platform serves discovery scientists, highlight any exposure to biological data, LIMS, ELN or ML pipelines; even a side project signals genuine domain curiosity.
