Scientist – Research Computational Biology

HYDERABAD (IN)ONSITEPOSTED: 9/25/2026

ROLE OVERVIEW

Amgen's ARIA Computational Biology team in Hyderabad sits at the intersection of large-scale data science and disease biology, and this Scientist role is central to how the company replenishes its therapeutic pipeline. Rather than supporting discovery from the periphery, the position directly shapes which targets advance into Amgen's oncology, inflammation and immunology portfolios. The scientist mines multi-modal omics and screening data to characterise disease endotypes, test therapeutic hypotheses and surface novel targets, while building reusable platforms that make those insights scalable across therapeutic modalities. For an experienced computational biologist, this is a rare chance to work on foundational target biology with a global biotech leader, applying long-read transcriptomics, single-cell atlases and transcriptional foundation models inside a genuinely cross-functional research environment with strong scientific visibility.

ROLE DEFINITION & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • •Analyse multi-modal omics, single-cell and screening datasets to characterise disease endotypes, mechanisms of action and novel therapeutic targets.
  • •Design and execute holistic computational strategies for target identification, prioritisation and validation across oncology and inflammatory disease.
  • •Develop methods and platforms that deliver foundational target insights, including expression biodistribution and RNA/protein isoform complexity.
  • •Apply long-read transcriptomics, proteomics and screening technologies to discover disease-enriched isoforms.
  • •Partner with data science and information systems teams to embed ARIA tools into Amgen's integrated R&D platforms.
  • •Build and maintain reproducible pipelines, interactive portals and workflow management systems for research stakeholders.
  • •Present complex findings to cross-functional scientific audiences and influence target portfolio decisions.
  • •Mentor peers, review code and contribute to collaborative engineering and analytical standards.

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ph.D. in computational biology, bioinformatics, data science or a related discipline; Master's degree acceptable with 3+ years of relevant research experience.
  • Demonstrated expertise in analysing and interpreting single-cell omics data, including scRNA-seq, spatial and multi-omics modalities.
  • Strong programming in Python and R plus Linux/Unix fluency; comfort with Git and collaborative coding practices.
  • Hands-on familiarity with cloud computing environments and high-performance computing (HPC) infrastructure.
  • Proven record of designing and executing computational strategies that answer challenging biological research questions.
  • Excellent presentation and written communication skills for diverse scientific audiences.
  • Self-starter mindset with a collaborative, growth-oriented approach to cross-functional research.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • •Immunology / Immuno-Oncology Background
  • •DepMap, TCGA, GTEx & Human Cell Atlas
  • •RShiny Interactive Portal Development
  • •Nextflow Workflow Orchestration
  • •Agentic AI Frameworks

ORGANIZATION CONTEXT & CULTURE

Amgen is a leading global biopharmaceutical company committed to unlocking the potential of biology for patients suffering from serious illnesses. It discovers, develops, manufactures, and delivers innovative human therapeutics, focusing on areas with high unmet medical needs such as oncology, cardiovascular disease, bone disease, and inflammatory diseases.

TEAM SIZE: 25,000+ employees
INDUSTRY: Biotechnology / Pharmaceuticals

EXPECTED CAREER ROADMAP

Within two to five years, a strong performer in this role typically progresses from Scientist to Senior Scientist and then Principal Scientist, taking ownership of a target biology or computational platform portfolio. Amgen's global R&D footprint makes lateral moves into translational sciences, biomarker development, precision medicine or data science leadership realistic. Because the work spans immunology, oncology and isoform biology, exit options in India remain strong: computational biology leadership roles at AstraZeneca, Novartis, Roche, MedGenome, Strand Life Sciences and AI-driven drug discovery start-ups, plus India-based global capability centres and academic collaborations.

APPLICATION ADVISORY

Tailor your CV around two or three projects where you generated biological insight, not just pipelines — quantify datasets, cell numbers, targets nominated and downstream outcomes. Be ready to whiteboard your single-cell analysis workflow, explain isoform quantification approaches, and discuss how you would validate a target using DepMap, GTEx or TCGA. Expect questions on foundation-model fine-tuning and knowledge graphs. Prepare a short talk on a target you helped prioritise, and highlight how you communicated findings to wet-lab scientists.
