Pharmacovigilance (PV) is the science of detecting, assessing and preventing adverse effects of medicines after they reach patients. Every marketed drug is monitored for safety, and regulators such as CDSCO, the US FDA and the EMA require companies to collect, evaluate and report adverse events within strict timelines. That obligation is what creates steady hiring in drug safety teams across pharma companies, CROs and specialist PV service providers.

Entry-level work usually starts with Individual Case Safety Report (ICSR) processing: receiving an adverse event report, coding it with MedDRA, assessing seriousness and expectedness, writing the case narrative and submitting it on time. With experience, professionals move into literature surveillance, aggregate reports such as PSURs/PBRERs and DSURs, signal detection, risk management plans and safety physician or PV scientist roles.

Most openings ask for a life-science, pharmacy, nursing or medical degree. Recruiters look for working knowledge of ICH E2 guidelines, MedDRA coding, safety databases such as Argus or ARISg, and the discipline to meet regulatory reporting deadlines.
